John M. Gardner purchased a seven-acre tract in 1879 and established the first structure there known as The Gardnerville Hotel. That hotel had originally been known as the Kent House before it was relocated and renamed. Today, the hotel is no longer standing, but Gardnerville continues to thrive and grow. Danish settlers were prominent in the late 1800’s, but in 1898, the Spanish and French Basque brought sheepherding to the rich farming valley and later established some inns and restaurants. Basque dining remains a culinary attraction in Gardnerville. Home prices can be found in the mid $100,000 range and go up to the multi-million dollar pricing.
Named after Minden, Germany by H.F. Dangberg who was a first settler to the area in 1906, it is a very unique town of Northern Nevada. Among other historical facts, Minden was a getaway destination for some of the biggest names in Hollywood, including Clark Gable and Jean Harlow. In the 1950’s subdivisions began to spring up and today it is a growing area, yet maintains that homespun feeling where you can be a part of community events, or just enjoy the valley lifestyle at the foot of the Sierra Nevada mountains. Home prices in this community start in the $150,000 range and move up from there.
Gardnerville and Minden are neighboring sister communities that provide similar real estate opportunities in both price and valley locations.
